Automakers and Tech Firms Join Hands!

August 15, 2015

Technology is the basis of the world we have come to live in. It is what drives us forward. Speaking of drive, one of the best examples to explain our advancements based on modern tech is that of the automobile industry. Vehicles, as we see them today, are far from what they were a few decades ago. Technology has driven them to the pinnacle they stand on.

The Basis

According to CPA Global, the battleground for acquiring the major share in the global automobile industry will be subject to four specific areas: Safety, automation, communication, and in-car entertainment features. This is what this global IP management and tech company suggest.

When you come to think of it, there is one common denominator in all the four aspects of future auto endeavors, the influx of technology! This is a major part of the reason why so many automakers today are joining hands with tech companies to welcome a prolific future for the industry.

Companies Are At Go!

Modern auto giants like General Motors have already started putting in more effort and more investment in order to revolutionize personal mobility with autonomous vehicles. Last year, GM invested a stunning $500 million in Lyft so it could welcome a prolific future for the company as well as the industry.

The American automaker also went on to expand the Research and Development department with Volkswagen and Honda. All of this was in addition to the assembly of senior AV engineers who are dedicated and passionate about their job.

Similarly, other major names in the global automobile industry can also be seen collaborating with different tech giants. A good example to mention here is the Ford Motors who has partnered with AT&T, Amazon, and Google in order to promulgate SmartDeviceLink.

Foreign Names

American automakers are not the only ones who have collaborated with tech companies. Toyota is among the leading foreign names in this regard. It was under contract with Microsoft for five years. This five-year partnership between the companies was expanded. In addition, Toyota also invested an additional $1 billion for research and development. There have also been two AV research centers set up by MIT and Stanford.

The Division

Partnerships that allow carmakers to involve much of the modern tech into their future cars can be divided into different models. One of such models is the one discussed throughout the blog—a collaboration between a tech company and carmaker. Others include collaboration between different automakers, between an automaker and an educational institution, and supplier-automaker collaboration among a few others.

It is fair to say that the future of the automobile industry is bright in terms of the influx of innovative technology.
