Overheating Engines Part One: 3 Common Causes

There is no shortage of vehicles on today’s roads. This is especially true with a PwC forecast showing about 107 million vehicles will be manufactured globally in 2020 alone. And if you’re an owner of one of these vehicles, it’s important to be prepared for something to go wrong. After all, vehicles aren’t indestructible. In the summer, a common problem seen with vehicles is overheating. So in this two-part series, we’re going to discuss some common causes of overheating in Japanese engines and how to handle it. Let’s start with talking about what exactly can cause a vehicle to overheat.

A damaged water pump: Coolant is supposed to run through your engine and radiator, keeping them cool and functioning properly. But sometimes, the seals or gaskets in the water pump, which delivers the coolant, can become worn or damaged. If this happens, a leak can occur — with a coolant leak, the engine won’t receive enough coolant and can overheat. A damaged water pump may also result in a high-pitched sound and corrosion.

Blown head gasket: The head gasket in your vehicle is a seal in the engine — if this seal becomes damaged, coolant and combustion gases can start to leak. This can result in a big mess, with engine oil getting into the coolant galleries and vice versa — which is obviously not great for your engine. If you catch it soon enough, a head gasket can be fairly easy to replace.

A broken thermostat: Thermostats are designed to control how much coolant comes and goes between the radiator and the engine. Therefore, if the thermostat is broken, it can’t properly read the temperature. Without a correct temperature reading, the flow of the fluids between the engine and the radiator won’t be right and can result in a failure or overheating. This is often a simple fix and you may not have to start looking for used Japanese engines and transmissions for sale right away.

These are a number of problems that could result in overheating in Japanese engines and these are just a few of the more common reasons. In part two of this series, we’ll discuss what you should do if your high quality engine overheats.
